I met my Wife 10 years ago whilst working as a doorman. I was 27. After finishing work I offered one of my martial arts students and her friend, Kirsty Currier aged 19, a lift home. It sounds cliché, but it was love at first sight and we exchanged numbers.
Kirsty worked as a cashier at the Lloyds TSB in Widnes. After getting to know her it became apparent that she was very self conscious about her weight. She always said “I can’t believe I’m bigger than my boyfriend” – she was a size 18 at 15 stone. She was very naive and always asked permission to do anything, even go to the toilet. This was all due to Kirsty’s ex boyfriend who had continuously put her down, psychologically bullied her and pushed her around making her feel worthless.
After going out with Kirsty for a short while, she asked me to train her up. I replied “if that’s what you want, yes. But I love you the way you are and the person you are, but yes not a problem.” When I first started training Kirsty in the gym, she was very worried that everybody was looking at her and that she was making mistakes, even when I was with her, a very experienced successful Personal Trainer. On three occasions Kirsty stormed out the gym saying I can’t do it. But did I give up? No, as I knew Kirsty wanted to get back to her slim self as she was prior to the relationship with her ex.
After one month in the gym doing weights, high repetition, I then asked Kirsty to attend my Ladies Only Kickboxing class of which she agreed. Upon starting the class Kirsty was giggly and giddy due to her nerves, but she seemed to click with the techniques and moves as if it was meant to be for her. After 1 year Kirsty’s self esteem seemed to grow, but only a little, and her weight started to drop. I then asked her to compete and she agreed, starting off on Light Continuous Kickboxing of which she later went on to win a championship in Doncaster. After seeing her compete I knew she was going to be successful as she had found that uplifting feeling of achievment that so many get from training.
It’s now 10 years on and Kirsty has dropped from a size 18 to an amazing size 8, loosing 5 and half stone and having 2 babies in the process! Both girls, now aged 2 & 3. She also went on to win several fights, including a British Kickboxing Title winning first round stoppage. She left the bank and started teaching alongside myself and then became co-owner of our club, which is now a successful club for champions both in the ring and in life, many of whom have been inspired by my wife’s achievement in health & fitness and martial arts.
Kirsty is now a certified instructor in Thai Boxing under the mentouring of the highest Grand Master in the UK, Grand Master Sken, who graded her over several weeks of intense training (she gained higher marks than me lol). Kirsty’s character now? Well she is a strong lady that gives with the presence of a champion. She remains her bubbly and friendly self, but with an added strong will and great confidence. She has conquered herself and the doubters/nay Sayers that put her down in the past, and it’s all down to martial arts and my love and support.
I truly believe that any woman can achieve if they believe, it just takes time, hard work, the ability to visualise what they want, determination, dedication and discipline. Kirsty has helped so many others with weight loss, I have attached other success stories due to her achievement.
